Bricklaying & Repointing

Small Porch (brick wall, upvc door and windows with pitched roof)

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi Guys, Im planning to have a small porch on the side of my house. Approximately 1.5 x 1.5m. My house is end of terrace and 1.5m from the boundary. I have a wrap around extension which the porch will bolt on to. My space is limited hence why i want to maximize my porches width to the boundary. My main concern is the internal space i will be left with as my builder has planned for a cavity wall with insulation which will eat into the already tight space i have for the porch. By going with a single layer of brick will i have any problems? the porch will be part brick and the rest upvc with a pitched roof. im not really fussed with the temperature inside just want space for shoes and what not. Any concerns i should be aware of as well as pitfalls by going single skin? Will it be sturdy enough with a single layer of brick holding everything in place? Thanks in advance,

You are really talking of a small consevatory but ithink a single skin wall will fall foul of building regs as your builder is obviously going with a cavity to provide insulation to the masonary area all being said you will struggle to get the uvalue up to the standard without losing a lot of floor area.

hi there . there is a solution for your porch floor space . providing the brickwork is correctly damp proofed ie dpc cut into existing and dpc lapped under screeded floor into brickwork you could use a thermos insulation backed plasterboard on the inside gaining you another 150mm floor space allround . however if your builder is needing to appease building control regs you may need to go with a cavity wall . I would maybe recommend using a 3 inch thrmolite block inside with a 50 mm cavity insulated using 50 mm celotex . this again will improve floor space by 100mm all round . providing this is not a habited room ie you still have a secondary front door going into your house and you have mentioned that the temp does not concern you in there both of these solutions should be possible to gain you the customer your ideal .
