Floor movement casing the existing grout to shift and come out creating holes between the tiles
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.29 PM
I have a client who has asked me to regrout a floor which has only been down for about 8 months. When you walk on the floor you can feel the floor move which is causing the grout to crack. I have told the client that it is pointless to do this as it will happen again. Is there an alternative to grout that I could use which is more flexible?

Unfortunately the flooring hasn't been prepared properly. Once the tiles are removed ensure existing floorboards aren't loose, overboard with a cement board ( no more ply or marmox) secure as advised by the manufacturer, prime (sbr) tile with flexible adhesive and flexible grout to finish.

There are flexible grouts available , but it sounds like there is too much movement, which points to the floor not being over boarded correctly before it was tiled. i would suggest trying a flexible grout plus a flexible additive first , if this does not work then there is too much movement , and will have to be taken up .

There is only one remedy ,and that is the complete removal of the tiles to find out the problem ,which is in my opinion fixers error.

If you rake out and try and regrout , it will simply crack again...I am afraid the only remedy is floor up, anti fracture mat down and then re-tile ... In all instances using S1/S2 or the like flexible adhesive and a suitable flexible grout.. GW
