towel rail on central heating and with electric element
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM
We have a towel rail fitted which has worked very well off the central heating. It has an electric element so it can be used to warm towels when the central heating is turned off. Valves are screw-down tap type. When, as now in summer, the central heating is turned off should we adjust these valves, for example close them so water heated by the electric element only circulates within the radiator? If it does not matter is their perhaps "best practice" which professional heating engineers would recommend?

Shutting both valves down will allow the radiator to heat up quicker and maintain temperature which would be less expensive to run.
If you don't shut them down, residual heat can transfer downwards so heating it up would take longer and the element would be on longer to maintain temperature.
(Don't forget to open them both up when you put your heating on)

Hi it doesn't really matter, just use the electric element whenever you want your towels warmed, shouldn't affect the central heating at all 👍🏻

Hi Tony,
As has previously been stated if you can turn off both the valves when using the electric element all the better. You need to minimize the amount of heat migrating away from the radiator through the central heating water.
