Painting zinner white paint over old woodwork
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.34 PM
hello, I'm going to paint over old woodwork, like door architraves. The old paint is cracked or flaking off. i've already sanded down the wood but there still appears to be more loose paint an gets bigger the more I sand down. should I do some more sanding down... i dont want to end up doing the whole architrave ... if not needed. or is this the only way? I have some photos but cant upload!

Hi,
Sounds like someone has glossed over gloss to me. You need to scrape/sand back all loose and apply an undercoat first before glossing.
If you're using Zinsser perma-white it shouldn't need an undercoat

I would advise using a scrapper to remove all loose paint and then sand down untill it's all smooth, even if it means sanding down the whole thing.
If the preparation is rushed and scruffy if will effect the final outcome.

Hi d2001,
There's an old saying which never gets old... "A job well-prepared is a job half done."
Paint is only as good as the surface it's in contact with. So new paint over loose paint is only ever going to be.. loose.
So yes - get back on it with 120-grade sandpaper and a good scraper, and take every piece of loose paint off those surfaces! It might be a pain, but stick the radio on and tell yourself you're doing a proper, "pro job" :)
