Tiling

Damp rising through old quarry tiles can I tile on top?

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.28 PM

We have an old semi with original quarry floor there is some damp coming through I'm odd places is it safe to tile over with lime stone tiles? Is there a topical damp proof membrane product that can be tiled over? As the floor does not have traditional up to date dpc and we don't want to take up the floor as that would delay us moving in.

Hello, my opinion is not to rush and tile on top of, unless you want a quick job just to get rid of the headache. But if you are not looking to spend, I would recommend a coat of damp proof, or two, with an hour of drying in between them, then a layer of latex, of which new tiles to be put on top of. Mind of the height, not to give you toubles afterwards.

Coat quarry tiles with an approved sealer.. Put down bal rapid mat and then tile over You need to have a barrier between the old floor and the new one as limestone will absorb moisture and will stain. GW.

You can always put a clear sealant on the top of the tiles then tile over the original one or take the old ones up and put a seal the floor as well to stop damp coming up again
