How soon can I paint new plaster?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi all, Just had walls skimmed in bedroom. In a hurry to get it decorated. What is the very earliest I can apply a mist coat and then final coat. It's been 2 days and walls are pink, no moist spots on the surface. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Personally I would not paint on newly plastered walls for at least 3 to 5 days. I would leave the heating on to help with the drying time. If there is moisture behind it will just push the paint back out and you get an velvet effect on the wall. The paint then looks and feels like powder on top of the walls. Then you can start over again.

Ideally, the rule of thumb with fresh plaster is to leave the plaster to dry naturally (ventilation as often as you can) for a week. Wipe the plaster down with a damp cloth or sponge and leave for another day to dry before painting. Mark - Buildingcraft

As long as there is no moist spots, it will be fine to decorate.

Leave it to dry naturally. Don't pump your house with heat as you'll get hairline cracks as it drys. As soon as it's completely light pink you're ok to mist coat it. You'll need 1x mist coat and 2x of your chosen emulsion. For best results buy trade paint.
