Sockets not working after plastering walls

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.15 PM

Today we've come home to find some but not all of our electrical sockets not working. We have had one of our rooms plastered today and the plasterer told us it's caused from water in the plaster and will be fine once it's dried out. I'm unsure because the trip switch wasn't triggered and it seems to be random sockets in different rooms that are affected. Can anyone tell me if this sounds right?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In all probability, the plasterer has disturbed an already loose connection at the back of a socket causing it to become disconnected. How many times have I seen this happen before? :-) To prevent water ingress to sockets during plastering, it's a good idea for plasterers and electricians alike to use Yoozyboxes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH_uxfR2hx0

If the plasterer unscrewed the sockets for plastering. The cables may have come out of their connection. This would not trip the switch. Sometimes this does happen. My advice when dealing with electrics is always ask a qualified electrician and if you do investigate always turn the main switch off I hope this might help

It sounds as if a cable has fallen out of one of the sockets and you have no ring main. This is a job for an electrician to test for continuity, it really will save you time and money having it done by a tradesman with the correct tools. Water does not cause sockets to stop working, it can trip all of the sockets but not the odd one or two.

What has happened is that a connection in a socket has come lose and there fore not working, this is why some of the socket may not be working.
