Vinyl sheet flooring onto new concrete floor
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.09 PM
We're currently having the concrete floor of our house replaced. 100mm of C20 concrete, with a 40mm sand and cement screed. The building company doing the work tell us that we should be fine to put down vinyl sheet flooring after leaving the floor to dry for around a week. Does this sound reasonable? Everything else I've read says we should leave months, but maybe this is unnecessarily cautious. Would appreciate any advice!

Hi
I would leave longer than a week the reason being there will be a lot of moisture within the new concrete and screed floor and this will cause an issue.
After the main screed floor has cured and dried you will then need to latex as this gives a smooth finish and will not be so dusty and gritty as screed
if at all possible leave to dry for a minimum of 3 weeks
Hope all goes well with your project

A concrete base takes on average 1mm per day to dry, it's a minimum of 4 weeks before you can even do a moisture (rh%) test, to fast track installation of a new flooring you must wait the 4 weeks then perform a rh% test to determine the next course of action, you will first need to mechanically remove the laitence from the concrete then it will absolutely require a surface dpm and a flooring installers screed. This is not work you can do yourself without experience as one pin prick in the dpm is a failure, otherwise you wait for roughly 18 months before it dries to 75% rh naturally, all this information is British Standard practice and stated in all manfacturer instructions which can be seen at your local library.
