If there is no lintel in an archway, what should we do and what cost?

There has been a wall partially removed in a house we are buying, but no way of knowing if a lintel was put in. We are left with a 3/4 wall between living and dining room. The remaining wall is the chimney breast and we are considering putting a logburner in the fireplace. We are worried that this could cause problems if a lintel isn't in place already. Is it worth getting this checked out and put in prior to the chimney alterations or is it reasonable to trust that there are no cracks around the archway (as the homebuilder survery mentioned). If a lintel needs to be put in, how big a job is this?

Hi Alison
There should be no need for a lintel as archways are self supporting and if built correctly are very strong.
If you are unsure and still concerned you could speak to a local structural Engineer for advise to put your mind at ease.
Another way is to go onto you tube and look for how to construct a Brick Arch.
Hope all goes Well
