Garage has an asbestos roof - do we need to remove it?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM
We are thinking of converting our detached garage into a spare/craft room. It has an asbestos corrugated roof, that has no damage. Do we need to remove the present roof?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's hazardous if you cut or break it
If your concerned then build a false ceiling to cover it up. There's a company called (shield) in Cornwall, seal to them if you have any technical issues

You don't need to.
However, you will want some kind of insulation under it as it is not the best insulator in those terms, so very cold in winter and very hot in summer, assuming we get one.
If it is grey then you can get rid of it yourself with very simple precautions:
Face mask for dust, gloves and bags/wrap to put the stuff in to take to the tip. (Call your local tip and they will normally arrange a special container for it or point you in the right direction.) Don't take it assuming that they will accept it without arranging it with them first!
So long as you are not going to be breathing the dust in, sucking it, licking it, etc it is not that dangerous! You can even spray it with a mist of water to reduce the dust too...
If, on the other hand it is not grey, it needs to be got rid of asap and you will need specialists to help you.
Personally, I'd get rid of it by removing it from any fixings immediately after a downpour and bag it up according to the tip's instructions and replace it with something nicer.
