Can I add an RSJ to open up this door?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi I have a 1930's semi detached house with a loft extension and a conservatory that runs the whole length of the house. I would like to open the original back door to be double the width (now opening into the conservatory). Would I need a structural engineer and drawings to do this? I'm a little anxious as the extra weight of the loft conversion. Any help would be appreciated. The current door opening is 680mm and I would like to open it up to 1340mm Thanks Darren

Hi Darren, I've seen your photos from added job. You will likely be good enough with 2nos pre-stressed concrete lintels 100mm x 140mm. But building inspector might still ask for structural calculations. Regards, Mauro
