Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

When priming MDF for painting 1) what's the best primer to use 2) what sandpaper gradings will I need for between coats 3) should I sand first? If so what grade? 4) what would be the best topcoat for a finish for a wardrobe? Many thanks in advance

Hi Nezza, Best primer to use is a one specific for MDF. May well take a good 2-3 coats to achieve a true solid white. Use a really fine grade sandpaper 180-240. As for a top coat its down to preference, id personally do 2 coats satinwood on top of the primer. Hope that helps.

Use a specific primer for MDF. I generally use the Dulux Trade range of paints and they provide a specific MDF Primer/Undercoat. Two coats should be fine for this and use a very fine grade of sandpaper and a very fine sanding block. Don't press too hard, you simply want to sand of any texture you may have from the paint application. As for the top coat, its down to your preference. Satinwood or Eggshell are the best finishes, depending on how durable you need it to be. You can use a small foam roller to apply the top coat which gives an excellent finish.
