Remove old ceramic tiles before laying sheet vinyl flooring?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM
Hello, I am having a new kitchen fitted on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. I have ordered some nice quality sheet vinyl for the new kitchen. The current floor is ceramic tiles attached to cement. I don't have the tools for this job currently and couldn't make the slightest dent or chip in them. I am a bit time pressured but I want the floor to look really good. Should I leave the ceramic tiles down, or take them up?

Hi Dear
If you have flat and uneven floors, don't need take off the tiles, just make sure before laying vinyl the floor surface tidy and clean of any dust, dirt and grease and if you have any damage or broken tiles start to do it repair with adhesive or sand and cement.
Do not risk for taking of tiling because you don't know under tile it is level or not, and need spend more time and money for self levelling before vinyl laying.
Hope is helpful.

Firstly are the tiles solid? if theres and loose or wobbling tiles then best to take them up and have the floor levelled correctly, if there is no loose or wobbling tiles then I will still recommend getting the floor levelled, a good floor installer would know the correct compounds to level and smooth over the top of the ceramic tiles.
if the vinyl is installed straight over the top without a smoothing compound then and grout lines or raised edges will eventually show through the vinyl
