Loft Conversion

Steel beam supports on party wall

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

For a 2 story terrace house I am planning to remove and re-build my old loft, which was converted about 40 years ago (long before i bought it), to gain more space and fix the sagging roof. My questions are: what is the best way to insert the new steel beams (5.3m long)? do we need to break into the next door neighbor's house through the party wall? what is the minimum required support? Do we need to get a party wall surveyor? do we need a structural engineer to check the existing foundations? TIA. Kind regards

Hi Sam,first of all for your peace of mind the best way to do it is to get a party wall surveyer to avoid any troubles with the neighbours and to explain them in some cases the course of the project (if they are concerned too much) ,usually is not that easy to get the steel beam inside the loft without disturbing party walls as long as the beam needs to seat on your side of the wall on a steel plate not on the neighbours wall, this is just in case they want to have a loft done later on or maybe there is one a in place, already any damages to their wall needs to be repaired by builder to keep everyone happy. job done. Previously a loft has been built and foundation checked , you should be fine I hope this will help and you have a better clue now. Thanks.simon
