Problem with painting our bathroom, surfactant leaching??

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi all, We recently had a totally new bathroom fitted but to save on costs decided to paint the bathroom ourselves. Used Unibond first and then Dulux Diamond Matt paint. Thats when the problems started, a yellow sticky substance starting leaking out of the walls. We then used an alkaline primer caked Coovar alike resisting primer and that didn't seem to work at all. Our bathroom now looks like something out of an Alien movie with huge sticky drips and paint cracks. We seem to have a massive condensation problem when it gets really cold with masses of water all over our tiles by the bath and sink, and windows. We have asked a few people what they think the problem might be, but no one seem sure. We are looking for someone to come and totally re paint the bathroom so if you think you might know what it is and interested in taking on the job then please do contact us! We are based in Battersea, London. Many thanks

I need a little more information on the nature of the walls prior to your decoration. Were they replastered as part of the building work? from your description, there is a history of damp and mould. The walls would have required a fungicidal wash prior to painting and the sources of damp removed by addressing ventilation and possibly adding a heat source like a radiator. Unibond in this instance is likely the culprit that has sealed in a damp, mouldy wall. It should only be applied prior to plastering / skimming. Diamond Matt is a good product for the bathroom provided the walls can breathe. At this stage, your best course of action would be to scrape / sand the walls back to a sound surface and start again.
