Should I lay the laminate floor before or after IKEA fitted kitchen installed?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.28 PM
I’ve ordered a fitted kitchen from IKEA with all their integrated appliances i.e. dishwasher, washing machine, hob, oven, separate fridge and freezer. So the question is should I lay the laminate floor before or after the kitchen fitted? It would be great to get some advice from someone who is experienced with IKEA fitted kitchen. Many thanks!

Don't lay your floor before the kitchen units are fitted. The flooring is laid up to the legs of the units and then the kickboard/plinth sits on top to hide the gap. The laminate can be fitted into the spaces where the integrated appliances will go so it is possible to slide the appliances out if there is a problem with them in the future (eg, leak from dishwasher, etc. You don't have to run the flooring into the appliance spaces but you need to ensure you there is enough room under the work top to pull them out if you need to. If the laminate is laid before the units are fitted, it will be difficult to replace the flooring in the future without disturbing the kitchen. Thanks

honestly read the instructions on the laminate, you can't fit kitchen units on top of a laminate floor as it anchors it in that area restricting the expansion and contraction of the flooring which leads to failure.

Lay your floor after you have you kitchen fitted that way you can get your units all stable and level and if you have any problems you won't have to take your floor up aswell as your units

Lay your floor before fitting the kitchen, that way it is easier to store items under your plinth, enables easier cleaning to the area underneath as it has laminate flooring, plus the surrounding area can be fully sealed to prevent insects etc.
If the floor is very irregular the surfaces can be evened out either by self levelling prior to the laminate or using other methods of underlay or wood.
