No pointing put on old riven paving slabs

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

Just had new patio built with 450 x 450 old riven paving slabs - gap is about 5 mm but builder did not point. I asked why no pointing and was told these types of slabs do not need pointing. I am now wondering if this is correct

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All patios like wall and floor tiles should be pointed and jointed, otherwise weeds and other plants will grow through, with a patio you can use an everbuild geofix ready mixed jointing compound that is simply brushed with a soft brush into the joints between the paving slabs, this is then jointed/pointed and left to set, this products then hardens and stops any growth between this pacing, the product I mentioned is available from diy outlets.

I agree with Roma, the pointing forces all the mortar into the tiny gaps in between the mortar/slab/ground so it will not allow any weeds to grow through.
