Builder laid a new patio but most of the slabs are uneven.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.08 PM

I had a builder lay a patio 3x3m last week (Marshalls Argent Smooth slabs). Since then most of the slabs have become noticeably uneven both underfoot and when putting garden furniture out. When he laid the first few they looked a bit wonky but he said they would even out and not be noticeable when joining compound was in between the slabs. He also said that because the slabs were so heavy some had sunk but if they are all the same weight would they not all sink the same amount? He used our old patio slabs crushed up and flattened as the sub base and then laid each slab individually on cement mix. Being smooth granite the slabs are not riven where I would expect some unevenness. Should I ask him to take them up and start again or is it usual to have some some rise and fall? We have already has some to do's with him over other things he has done badly in the garden so don't want anymore unneeded run in's. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I am sorry but crushed slabs is not a sufficient base. He needs to pull up the new slabs, remove the crushed slabs (or raise the patio if possible) tamper down 400mm of type1 MOT ,200mm of sharp tampered on top, then he can relay on a bed of cement.

Yes 100%... There is evidently a problem and if it is happening already this soon then things will probably only get worse. I would suggest getting them taken up and either get some type 1 and pass over with a whacker plate a good few times or lay a couple of inches of concrete as a sub base. If he has used old slabs its probable that the base isn't sufficient. If he has any pride in his work whatsoever he will be more than happy to sort this
