Old Wylex 5 amp wire fuse upgrade to Mini trip switch 6 amp fuse

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.48 PM

Background: Lights are blowing, diagnosing is awkward with the wire so we've bought a WYLEX 6a type B* to make this process easier. This isn't our solution or anything, I understand fuses blowing isn't good and we intend to fix it asap. My Question: The light fuse is currently a 5a wire fuse, there is no 5a MCB equivalent. Only 6a MCB's are an option, is upgrading from 5a to 6a fuses likley to cause any kind of damage or is this the standard upgrade? Thanks for any advice, peace of mind is priceless. Reply 'DEACON ELECTRICAL SERVICES': You didn't read or answer my question. "Don't really understand why you would think fitting an MCB would solve anything" I in no way implied that. It's simply to check one of the 3 possible lights that's causing it to blow. Reply to 'Refined Renovations': Very appreciated, thanks. The electrics here was all fitted by my late Grandad whilst I watched so I know where and how it works, confident enough to test fittings to narrow it down to limit cost but not enough to touch anything ha. Thanks again, have a good day.

Hi Frank, yes the 6A is the modern equivalent. Remove all bulbs and turn all switches off on that circuit. Insert MCB, turn on, if it stays on work one fitting at a time until problem is located. If it doesn't stay on before further testing there is an issue with wiring that will probably require an electrician to diagnose. Best of luck, Rob

It would be a good solution but for the rewireable fuse rupturing, quite obviously there is a fault on the circuit which needs finding before any plug in MCB is thought about. Don't really understand why you would think fitting an MCB would solve anything. As the MCB will probably trip a lot more than a fuse will. Finding the fault requires a multi tester with an electrician doing it, with the circuit off. Your edit...it may not be one of the lights though. It could be a cable fault,it could be anything. This could all be determined by a multi tester. I can see that you are determined to do it your way so carry on. I have given my answer on the MCB issue, Howyou go about resolving it is up to you. Your 2nd Edit... err hang on Frank, I knew exactly what you were trying to do with regards to MCB I was trying to stop you from doing it! Amazing that sometimes people go with the answer they want to hear rather than the correct and safe one.

Hi I would start by removing the fuse and carrying out insulation resistance test on the light circuit as well as continuity test. Also carrying out basic checks such as connections in circuit will eliminate and make fault finding easier. Replacing the old type fuse with 6 amp MCB wont resolve the issue as RCD will trip quicker then old fuse because of thermal and magnetic effects. Hope this helps you in resolving your trip issue.
