Hi there
I've recently had a flood, which resulted in the insurance company removing and replacing my kitchen. The downside of this is they've raised the floor after the kitchen they put in meaning the height of the floor to top of worktop is 880mm.
Now both my husband and I are tall (5'9 and 6'2 respectively) but we thought well it won't be too much of a problem.
We've got a freestanding washing machine at a height of 852mm prior to balancing this, the floor isn't perfectly level either but again I can live with that.
They've left a gap of 860mm floor to underworktop in corner for freestanding washing machine but it reduces to 850mm half way through. Given that the freestanding appliance will not push far back, what are my options. Most freestanding machines are 850mm at lowest setting too the prior to balancing. Even if I squeezed it in, with the vibrations etc surely this would weaken the worktop (it's joined just to the right hand side) and would this not damage my kitchen tiles when machines on over long term use?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
If The work has been carried out by and insurance company/ There appointed builder the work that they carry out must go back like for like as it sounds the Kitchen is not fit for purpose when the work is carried out you can pay an up lift cost I.E if you had a timber work top and want to change to granite you would be liable for the differ in cost but the work should still be carried out as if the had been no flood! with what you have stated you need to speak to your insurance company again and tell them the issue and they have to put it right this work should of been signed off by the Loss adjuster also when the work was completed.
Hope this helps

Why does the space reduce halfway back?
If there is a lip or step on the floor, you can knock it out with a chisel or sds breaker. Hire one if necessary, just tell the what you want it for and they will sort you out with the right bit of kit.
If there is something holding the work surface in place so that there is a bar or something then look at ways of removing this.
As a last resort there are varying thicknesses of work top available so replace the bit that's too deep and set it at the same height as the other one, you could gain an inch (25mm) that way.
Or last but not least you could remove that bit of top and replace it with one of these swanky new different height tops that are popular at the moment.
Something like this:

But with a colour and style that suits you...
