Like to know if I can keep my original lintel

I had a gas fire removed and iam let with a hole which is 22 inches height width is 16 inches I would like to open up the fireplace a few inches wider then have it plastered there won't be anything going in the opening. There is a concrete lintel already there how far can I open the fireplace keeping the lintel that is already there

lintel's have to seat 150mm (6") ether side work that out and you will know how wide the hole can be, if its not enough then putting a new lintel in isnt a big problem.
