Changing the style of a fence will affect my neighbour

I need to replace an old fence and I want to change the style of the fence from overlap panels to feather edge panels. The problem is the neighbour whose house is directly behind mine shares his fence with me and the neighbour to the left of me. The neighbour to the left has has overlap fence penels and have left their fence to rot. We are replacing the fence regardless so my question is, will we have to replace the fence with what is already there (overlap panels) or can we change the style of the fence (to feather edge panels) to our boundary and the neighbour at the back will have to endure two different styles of fence albeit with one in a bad state.
