Which trade should I be asking about removing a built-in corner cupboard?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.48 PM

We have a large built-in cupboard (W125cm x H238cm x D60cm) in the corner of our bedroom that we'd like to remove. It's a blockwork/brick construction with a wooden cupboard door built into a doorframe that runs the full height of the wall. There is no corresponding wall/cupboard underneath (it sits above the middle of the kitchen ceiling downstairs) but I'm not limber enough to get up into the loft to look at the joists. So essentially my question is - who should I be asking about whether it's structural or not, and if it can be removed? The handymen we've asked can't tell us whether it's structural or not and the builders/structural engineers we've asked won't quote on such a small job. Am I asking the right trades? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Where are you? I'd have a look. A good handy man should be able to tell you. You really need someone to have a look in the loft and see if it is holding anything up.

The chances are that the Block/Brickwork will support part of the ceiling above, whether a roof or a loft space. In the interests of safety, a Structural Engineer is probably the best qualified to check this for you.
