How to render an outside wall?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.27 PM
I want to understand how this work should be done. Looking through this site there seems two options 1: Remove all existing render, fix galvanised E M L, Apply scratch coat then top coat. 2: Remove render, apply SBR slurry prior to scratch coat then top coat. I want to do as much of the work myself so will remove old render, which is the best method for crack free finish. Thanks for your help and advice.

Hi , Able plastering here .
It all depends on what the wall is like underneath the render your taking off. If you find the render is coming off in sheets then you have a key problem. If the render is coming off in small bits then the key is pretty good. Personally I always use E M L sheets if I'm rendering over smooth bricks or were there are joints.
Both methods are good , just depends on what your rendering onto .
Blockwork - spray lightly with water - scratch & top coat
Bricks - sbr slurry - scratch & top coat / sbr slurry -EML- scratch & topcoat
Stone wall - sbr slurry - EML - scratch & topcoat
There are other surfaces you can render over but they are pretty much the obvious ones . I hope this helps thanks.

It all depends on the substrate that you are laying onto, if it is brick then option 1 is the best bet. Once render has been removed, clean all dust off every square inch of the surface, again depending on the substrate and the materials you want to use water may be good enough suction control for a scratch it may not. SBR, PVA are both for suction control and you want your render to cure slower rather than faster so i would advise using SBR on an existing building. I will say though this though, a plasterer willing to put his name on someone else preparation spells doom for me.
