Chimney & Fireplace

Log Burner next door, party wall hot

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

I live in a very old cottage (pre 1840 converted barn) and currently have an empty inglenook fireplace. I understand the party wall between me and next door is single brick. My neighbour installed a log burner/multi fuel stove. He did a lot of the work himself but I can't remember if he had a tradesman in to help line the chimney (we don't speak so I can't ask him!). When he has it lit, the wall at the back of my fireplace is red hot, I can only leave my hand on the wall for about 10 seconds and have actually dried clothes on a rack near the wall...it's that hot. Questions: is this to be expected, is his stove too near the wall, is it a fire hazard, is there something he hasn't done to cause this effect?? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the wall between you is single brick i.e. 100mm thick then the stove should be at least 50mm off his side of the wall as per building regulations document J. If it is a double skin wall then it can be right up tight so to speak. It sounds like he is over firing his fire (running it too hot) if your side of the wall is getting that hot. One way of reducing the heat would be to install a firebird in the back of you inglenook fireplace (however if it is exposed brick this won't work). His stove should have been signed off by either a HETAS engineer or building control. Try contacting them to check.
