Tiles laid on Isocheck 14C acoustic mats

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

To meet requirements we have to have 27db acoustic underlay on top of the concrete floor throughout our flat - so we could lay porcelain tiles throughout. Builder laid an Isomass product called Iscocheck 14c which is a floating acoustic mat. On top of this he laid (was advised to lay) ply boards which are meant to be fully bonded to the Isocheck mats and laid offset from these. The ply was 12mmWBP. The 1mtr oblong porcelain tiles were laid in a Mapei flexible adhesive on top of the ply and grouted with Mapei flexible grout. There was no Ditra mat required I am told except in the bathroom - none laid in kitchen though. Weeks after being laid the tiles are moving in places and the grouting repeatedly cracking and coming out including in bathroom where there is Ditra mat. Anyone laid tiles on this acoustic Iscocheck mating before? As it floats obviously not screwed down (but then neither is the ply). This is a whole property floor so very concerned.

Hi under no sercumstance should you be laying any tiles on a floating floor as the clue is in the name floating the whole floor will move constantly be it only ever so slightly but nevertheless it is moving and the inevitable result will be the grout constantly cracking and the tiles will become loose sorry for the bad news but you need to have a talk with your builder as he clearly doesn't know about tiling

Have you had any movement/cracking in the bathroom area(s) where the ditra mat was installed? On an install over an wooden sub floor which is floating then an uncoupling system such as ditra should be used throughout the area not just the bathrooms.

In my opinion the floating floor should not have been tiled,it would not make any difference if you laid ditra matting if there is any deflection(bounce) the matting will not stop this as it is only design for lateral movement youre floor is on the move and if not screwed solid the tiles will move and crack, this will in time only get worse your builder needs to rethink what he has done which is completly wrong.
