Is my floor level enough for laminate to be laid?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Hi there I was wondering if anyone could help. I have bought laminate flooring to lay along with a 5mm polystyrene foam underlay. I have just taken up the old Lino in the area which was stuck down with a strong glue that was trowelled out - it was a job trying to get it up. As I have pulled it up it had also pulled up bits of concrete along with it leaving a tiny uneven surface. I'd say the level in difference between the bits of concrete that have come up as opposed to the bits that haven't are about 2-3mm in difference so not hardly anything. This has occurred in patches across the whole room. If I were to lay the underlay over this would it even put the tiny uneven parts so it's suitable to lay the laminate or would it need to be screeded? I could send a photo if any tradesman would be kind enough to include their email address? Regards john

I wouldn't say so, any heavy traffic in those areas would eventual cause the laminate joints to fail. Use a self leveller on the floor 1st. Also I wouldn't use form underlay use fibre board, this will produce a better job over time.

You need to use a self levelling product first or this may cause problems over time. Laminate flooring joints are the weak points in the floor and can break if the underneath is not flat and solid. Foam underlay, a quality one, should be fine. They help cushion the impact and noise of a laminate floor. The better quality the product, the better the job and it will last longer.
