Filling nail holes in floorboards

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Should I fill the nail holes (I've countersunk them) before sanding the boards or after a first sanding? These are old floorboards exposed after removing carpet. What should I use to fill them? I'm hiring a drum floor sander.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, it depends on what finish you are going to apply afterwards. If you are using a floor paint then you can fill with wood filler before sanding. If you are using a varnish or oil then it's better to sand first and then once you have applied your finish you can use a filler such as Liberon wax filler that is close to the finished colour of the floor. Best of luck, Rob

There are many fillers available and ways to conceal the nail heads you have sunk. However, you should consider that you might, at some point, need to lift one or many of the boards to fix, repair or amend something they are concealing, e.g. Heating pipes or electrical cable. This is easiest and least invasively achieved when you are able to see the fixings securing the board(s). This is not a show stopper, merely worth noting. If you are wanting an exact colour match, after sanding the floor, retail some of the sawdust. Mix this with PVA into a thick paste and use this as your filler! Note that if you intend to oil the floor, not varnish, this will not be absorbed by the PVA mix and would therefore advise a brummer. Joiner's crayons are also a possibility. Hope this helps and best of luck!
