Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM
Open vented central heating system. I have drained all the central heating system down , header tank is empty .ball cock tied up . Water still comes out off drain valve , if stop cock is on it runs all the time ,if stop cock is off water will stop after draining the large tank in the loft and hot water cistern Where to look to find a fix Thanks Jim Thanks for that you were correct I worked it out and new Immersion fitted fixed that problem. Hi Jim
This sound like the coil in the hot water cylinder has split. Effectively your hot water and heating have become one system.
Have you noticed an discharge from either tank overflow previously? If not then have a careful look to confirm the water levels in both tanks are at a very similar level.
Simply put, when you drain the heating, you are also draining the hot water cylinder and large tank as the coil is no longer providing any separation.
I hope this helps - 100% confident on diagnosis.

Hi jimrb26,
For Starters you don't need to drain your large cistern, just the hot water one (aka F&E Cistern) which is the smaller one. Aslong as that cistern empty and you bleed your radiators from the top floor down the system should be empty but with possible residual water due to airlocking in the pipes.
Cheers,
Aaron

Hi Jim
As AD Pluming mentioned, you are bit confuse about tanks,
If you tied up the ball valve, it should be the one on the F&E (small one).
The big one is use to supply water to the cold and hot tap, (except kitchen cold).
I suggest to close the inlet of the small tank, if in good working condition, alternatively, tied up the ball valve.
Make sure you relise the ball valve on the main tank, to avoid shortage of water in the cylinder, and on the taps, not doing that, could also lead to airlock into the distribution pipes.
I hope this help
