Removal / size reduction of corner chimney

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Evening, I currently have a Victorian mid terrace house and would like to remove / size reduce a corner chimney within the kitchen. The chimney stack is still present on the roof and a column of brick is present in the room directly above the kitchen (bathroom). Q: what work would be involved in the removal or size reduction? The intention is to have a straight run kitchen alomg the wall and would like the units to run into the corner of the room (even if a column of brick is present) this is currently not possible due to the chimney taking up the corner of the room. Thx in advance for any replies (if the post is suitable for another category of tradesmen please state)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, your probably going to need a steel to support the rest of the chimney above what you want to take out, I would get someone who specialises in this type of work. You will need the correct gauge of steel etc. What area are you in?

Hello, re: removal of a chimney breast. To do this you would need: To comply with Building Regulations and an application to the local authority Building Control is required. If The chimney you are intending to remove is on a shared wall with your neighbour (the party wall) you will most likely have duties and obligations under the Party Wall Act 1996. The usual method is 'Gallows' steel brackets and a lintel inserted under the chimney in the attic. Get a good builder in to survey it
