Ripping up carpet and painting floorboards
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM
Hello! I live in a Victorian house with carpet in the hallways and bedrooms. I was hoping to rip up the carpets and see what's underneath. If the condition of the floorboards is ok, I was hoping to just paint it. Is that realistic? And is all of that a lot of work that requires a professional?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi ellie
It would be quite a lot of work, you did not mention any particular paint?
Assuming you will check the condition room by room, I would recommend seeing the quality of the flooring by first starting in the hallway and for paint, perhaps a simple natural oiling of the natural wood will be enough to give it a good refreshed look.
A hallway is small enough for you to start with and then you can decide if you want a professional in for the other rooms etc
Good luck!

It isn't a lot of work at all.
I get asked regularly to uplift and re install after work has been done.
Firstly how long has the floor been down?
Does the carpet need stretched back into place, if so you will need a professional in.
However my sole advice would be as follows.
Get a skilled installer round to assist with the uplift. He will advise if it could if needed go back down. The longer the flooring is down the more difficult it can be to re fit. There a whole load of aspects like has it been cleaned, was it second hand etc. All this can have a tolerance on the backing.
