questions about footings for a boundary wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Hi, i'm looking to put a wall at the bottom of my garden it's 20m wide 1.8m-2m tall. My questions are; 1. how deep and wide do i go for the footings? it's clay about 0.5m-1m down. 2. am i mad in thinking i could mix this by using a mixer to save cost(i know it will be time consuming ), rather than getting a concrete company. 3. what mix would i use? 4. How often does a expansion strip need to be for a wall this length and if i put a few pillars instead, is that as good? 5. If i paid a builder to build the wall how long could i expect it to be complete, and at what rate(Roughly)? 6. Lastly, Is it possible to use a nice brick my side and the other side the cheapest brick i can find? Thanks in advance guys you do a grand job helping DIYers like myself!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

For mixing our foundation your best mix is 3 to 1 that means three shovel of sand and gravel and one shovel full of cement should complete it in about a day and a half

Hi, Yeah you want to be digging down to solid ground (red clay) so about 0.5 - 1m is plenty. I would start it wider in blocks flat undground to spread load weight and ending with a brick thick visible brickwork, so you'd be looking at .3-.450m width strip foundation for bearing of concrete to wall. Mixing by hand is fine but still get a quote for delivered ready mix concrete could workout cheaper. volume = tons so length of foundation x width of foundation x depth of concrete(.15 -.3m fine without reinforcing) concrete for footings usually 3:1 ( 3 ballest to 1 cement) or 4:1 will be ok for a garden wall. Expansion joints ever 5-6 meters pillars at each ends. to build with footings should be a week. You can have any brick as long as they are the same size all metric or all imperial, you could have a semi engineering brick(smooth red) and a facing the other and a nice brick on edge or copping stone perhaps.
