Do I need permission to move an sewer inspection hatch.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hi - Thanks for looking at this question. We are doing a small rear extension and there is a small sewer hatch where looks like to two pipes merge into one outlet. This is about 2-3 meters of term house. Please check this picture. https://1drv.ms/i/s!AllpdotLi5YTjYEXz25cqaE19wEiug I have received conflicting advise on whether I need permission from sewer / water company to move this further in the garden. At the moment I'm not sure if both the inlets are from my house or not. Builder thinks we don't need to inform any except building control to move it within the property further back. Any advice or guidance I'd greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

HI there without seeing the job and depending on what you are using your extension for it might be easier to rebuild the inspection chamber and fit a double sealed manhole cover and leave it where it is hope this might help Nigel Mclelland

I believe that all major drainage and inspection chambers should be taken up with building regulations, or at least run it past them! Don't hold me to this, but I once heard that although the inspection chamber is on your property, you don't own it. Cut a long story short, if it needs accessing at any point then they have the write to it. I'm pretty sure they revert to drainage drawings to find hatch, and could get funny if it's been moved without permission. Hope this helps
