Uneven floor and cracking grout

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hi there, I've recently had a new bathroom fitted which is great apart from the floor. There are two problems. Firstly the floor is obviously uneven. There is a noticeable dip in the middle which is easily spotted by the tiles on the wall being uneven where they join the floor. There is a good few cms difference in the size of the tile joining the floor between the back and front of the room. Secondly, the grout is cracking all around the room where the floor tiles meet the wall. I'm guessing the problems are related. My bathroom fitter has told me I never specified the floor being leveled when I hired him. I kind of assumed this goes without saying! I know he put down plywood first which I think was 12mm. I noticed that was uneven but thought it would be corrected before the tiles were laid. I'm just looking for advice as to what to do next. Will re-grouting the edges solve the one problem or does the whole floor need redoing? I'm guessing my fitter will not be happy with the latter option! Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Needs removing and redone level so you have no deflection in the floor,it really should be redone in cement board not ply.

Regrouting won't make a difference Im afraid the floor will need lifted and either a self levelling compound applied before retilling or lift and retile and level using adhesive.

it would need lifting and if tiles are going on a wooden floor ply is not enough, there is going to be movement. it sounds like the floor will need to be all re-done or you will always have this happen.

There is also a product for ply called dittra matting you put down before you tile this helps take the movement out of the floor and also is a waterproofer aswell with flexi adhesive and grout.
