How far to build my extension from the boundary line

My neighbour has a 3m extension which he built 1530mm from the boundry line. I am now planning to also do a 3m extension and I am considering if I build the same distance from the boundry line would that be a big enough gap to easily maintain. Making the gap bigger will result in me loosing space inside. Any ideas on how to clean the gap out apart from using a hose pipe? Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
