Knocking down a built-in cupboard in an flat. How do I tell it's structural?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
Hi, So I want to knock down a brick/concrete cupboard thats in the kitchen of my ex-local authority flat (built in the late-1950s). I got a builder to look at this job but advised me that it could be structural, and that I'd need to call a civil engineer to look at this. So where can I get a civil engineer from? Is there a work-around? that wouldn't involve getting a civil engineer? Thanks

An easy way to see if a wall is structural is to look upstairs to see if if there is an identical wall sitting "on top of" the wall in question.
Ask your upstairs neighbour if you can have a look. If there is no wall mirroring the one yo want to remove then go for it. If there is then you can still remove it but you will need to replace it's structural integrity with a new joist. Any wall can can come down, it's just that some need to have Joists put in their place

Due to when it has been built there could be asbestos in the wall. Look out for a plasterboard like sheet in between the bricks. If you have doubts, call a professional!
