Gas Works

Gas flue but no gas pipe

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi there I hope someone can help me, I have a precast gas flue in my lounge but there isn't a visible gas pipe. there is a fireplace surround cemented to the wall with a plastic pipe sticking out at about the same height that I would expect a gas pipe to be. Is there likely to be a gas pipe buried behind the wall, or is it possible that the house was built with a gas flue but no gas pipe to supply a fire? At the moment there is an electric fire there, but we would love a gas fire. The house is 10 years old. Thank you so much for your replies, I can't get to the wall next to the fireplace opening though because the surround is cemented to the wall. Is it likely to be next to the surround or has it been completely blocked off from my access? Also, my lounge is on the second floor of a three floor house, would this make a difference to where the supply might be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, The gas supply is probably under the floor beside the fire. If you have concrete floors (which most 10 year old houses do) it will be covered with a thin coat of cement. It should be easy to see if the carpet is lifted.

Generally gas fire on new builds will come down the wall normally around 600mm from the side of the fireplace opening either left or right. in some cases the pipe is proud of the wall and is sealed with a soldered cap. you do get some under a concrete floor but this is rare.

Agree with Fireside, if its a recent build its most likely concrete floor and the gas pipe will come across the ceiling joists and drop down to your fireplace. The connection will be close to the fireplace and quite often plastered over. Sometimes they will even run it to the opening and cap it off there ready for a concealed fix. Depends how helpful the builder/installer wanted to be!
