Gap around edge of house?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

I'm thinking of renewing my driveway and paving over my front garden. However, there's a gap around the edges of my house (picture below). Can anyone tell me the purpose this gap which is filled with stones? I suspect it's to do with draining or damp control? Should I keep the gap or is it ok to pave over with brick? Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, Yes the shingle is there because any hard standing needs to be 150mm/6 inches/2 bricks below the damp course. The concrete path looks to be only 1 brick below damp course. Ideally if you are to lay any new hard standing it should be 150mm lower than the damp course. Thanks

Hi, The shingle is commonly known as a french drain, yet I doubt it has been constructed to the full spec. It's to prevent damp in your home as any type of firm finish should be 150mm below DPC (damp proof course) because apparently when rain hits the ground it can bounce back up that high. I strongly advise that you do not test the theory. Either lower your ground, put in water management system or do nothing
