How to paint victorian masonry bay window?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
Hi, I have flaking paint coming off my bay windows. What is the best way to refurbish for a long lasting finish? Currently I'm planning to get someone to sand it back to the stone, use a filler for any cracks and then paint with weathershield. I've read online about using a primer and sealer? Some that suggests using pva. Really lost on what the right way to do this. Thanks

if your talking about the stonework then you are right to clean back to the stone most likely lime or sandstone, fill with a sandstone/limestone repair and repaint with a lime wash , three coats damping down between coats and allowing to dry fully best bet is a day between coats this will allow your stone work to breathe unlike modern masonry paint i.e weather shield
good luck Alex

hi.
It is right to sand them down to timber. But better use heat gun tu burn off paint.
Then you can prime it (not with pva!) use dry rot primer. Then paint primer (undercoat) and gloss on top. 2-3 coats. That will keep them good for some time. Wheatear shield has tendency to flake off.
If windows exposed to lot of sun light in summer use bright colours.
Regards Rob.
