Do I need access to all the radiators to change the hot water tank

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

I've just moved into a new house and have furniture and boxes everywhere. I have noticed the hot water tank in the airing cupboard is leaking so will need changing. Do I need to clear access to all the radiators to drain the system for this job or can the tank be isolated and the water left in the system?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi An engineer will need access to all radiators to drain the heating system. The cylinder can't be isolated on the heating circuit, only the hot water circuit. Thanks

Hi Chris Yes you will not need access to all the radiators in order to remove faulty cylinder. In order to remove cylinder I would isolate cold supply to cylinder and isolate f and e tank in loft which automatically tops up heating system. Then find yourself a long enough hose and attach it to the cylinder and open up drain off into toilet/bath/outside. While cylinder is draining find the lowest radiator with a drain off attached and start draining heating system. Once it starts slowing start opening up bleeds on radiators to completely empty system also make sure manual override on heating zone valve is open. Once draining has stopped crack nuts on cylinder and remove. Put some old towels down and dust sheets as there's bound to be some excess water. And possibly get someone to give you hand cylinder might be tricky to get out. Sometimes the washer on the drain offs have been soldered in so you'll have allot of fun with that. Good luck

Hi you will not need to access radiators as the cylinder will supply your hot water and not your heating
