Will 22mm copper pipe leak if scored but not actually cut with pipe cutters?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Okay, so yesterday I made a start on fitting my new bathroom. I wanted to cut all of the old pipework back to where it enters the bathroom, which is up through a concrete floor. When cutting back the hot water pipe, I was unable to turn my pipe cutters all the way around the pipe. I believe this is because this was closeby to where the pipe bend finished and the pipe was not perfectly circular at this point. I managed to cut the pipe back a little higher up, but the pipe now has a slight score mark from where I attempted to cut it previously. My question is, will this score mark in the pipe eventually cause a leak? I've stuck two push fit isolation valves in where I cut the pipe back and there haven't been any leaks so far. I would just really like to know if I should hack out some of the concrete floor now and replace the scored piece of copper pipe, or if it will hold up and I don't need to worry. Any help or advice anybody could give me on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi its hard to say without seeing the pipe but if you have doubts I would 100% just change it for peace of mind.

Is it a pressurised system? If so i would! That will be a weak point in that pipe and if it's pressurised up to 1.5 bar over time could burst and leak. Better to be safe.

It depends how deeply you scored it and the pressure inside. It may well leak in future. I would change it out or solder a straight joint over it to strengthen it to be on the safe side.

hi, it will most likely need repairing or just cutting out and soldered just to be on the safe side even if it isn’t leaking now, It may lead to a leak further down the line and you have the peace of mind 👍🏼

Best advice I can give is to replace. the wall of the pipe will be thinner where the score is creating a weak point, last thing you want is a leak under a newly tiled floor
