Painting & Decorating

Cosmetic cracks between plasterboardin ceilings painted in silk finish throughout.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.07 PM

There has been a slight settlement in the property which has resulted in cosmetic cracks in some of the ceilings. All ceilings are silk painted and silk paint would obviously have to be used to repaint them. What would a tradesman use to fill these cracks (would appear to be between plasterboards) prior to painting and would he not want to do the job because of having to use silk paint. I do not want an attempt to put matt over silk as I have been told this is very problematic. It is a large bungalow and it affects several rooms including sitting room, quite large, and also a double bedroom along with a couple of smaller rooms. I would emphasise that this is cosmetic and not structural.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It really depends how big the cracks are I typically use a product called smig its a really good filler. If the cracks are too big and the filler calls out you can use bonding plaster but you would have to really sand it down afterwards

Any good filler will be fine - fill proud and sand flat once it's properly dry. If you would like to have matt on the ceilings you can either use eggshell emulsion as a base and then matt on top of that or use a good primer such as Zinsser Bullseye123. Both those methods should mean you can cover the silk without any problems.

No filler in the world will prevent a return of a crack. The crack needs bridged with fibre tape then burried with a filler then joint cement then lightly sanded. There is a filler on the market that will adhere to a painted surface it states this on the bag.

Hi guys Definitely worth opening up the cracks then use Pva glue: Fibre tape: Skim coat finish: No sanding required: Hope you find this helpful
