Wire an outdoor light on Wall opposite light switch

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

I have a 1 gang 2 way switch on the exterior wall of the lounge. Can I install an outdoor light on outside of that wall and feed the wire by drilling a hole through the wall to the back of the light switch if I change it to a 2 gang switch, and would i have to take a separate feed from the ceiling rose in the lounge? The light switch currently has com - 1 red, L2 - red and yellow, L3 - black and blue wires Cheers for the answer below, i shall get an electrician in to quote me.

Think by the nature of your question leave this to a professional. If you take it from the switch chances are there is no neutral there. If you take a L N & E from the light in the lounge and you can go from there. But as you don't really know what you are doing why not just leave it for someone who does. No harm in having a go, but to want to do something you have to understand how it works in the first place.

Hi This depends on how the property is wired, If you have a permanent feed to the light switch then yes you can, If your permanent feed is from the ceiling rose then you would need to take a feed from the ceiling rose or closer if possible to the exterior light or light switch with a switch line to the light or light switch, which ever is the easiest. As the exterior light would be fed from an interior circuit it would need to fused via a fused spur or switched fused spur. To determine the location of the permanent feed you should use a competent qualified electrician.

An outside light will need a line and neutral. From your description it's seems that you may only have a line so this won't be able to done. I would suggest hiring an electrician to talk you through your available options.
