Hot water pipe repair
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.07 PM
We had a leak on central heating pipe on kitchen wall, now repaired by plumber. We have plastered over the hole created, but a bright blue stripe has appeared on the plaster. What is this? Also, how long before we can repaint the wall? Should we even have plastered over this pipe?

The blue green colour is a copper oxide. If its is a normal pink type of gypsum plaster and is very thin it is not a problem. Its is a chemical reaction between the wet plaster and the copper pipe. this reaction basically stops when the plaster is dry. If the plaster is dry to a pale pink colour you can paint it.

Pipe could potentially still be leaking if that stripe has appeared recently.
I would never plaster over copper pipes lagging them in protective sleeving would be the best idea as it prevents the copper being attacked leading to leaks
