How to plan for a loft conversion/extension

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

I would like to enquire what the best way is to get a loft conversion/extension done. What steps do I need to take and in which professional should I contact and at what point? Currently there are 3 options. Option 1 is to convert and extend the current loft space (half boarded, accessible with fold down ladder). I would like a 'normal' set of stairs going up to the loft, have the loft converted and raise the roof for more space. We have a conventional boiler system with a water unit in the loft and this can be replaced as it's quite old. Option 2 is to extend the 1st floor bedroom and bathroom. The 1940's built house is already extended at the rear and hopefully foundations are strong enough to have an extension build on the top of the current extension. Option 3 is to combine option 1&2 but I understand that this can be very costly and might not even be possible due to planning permission. At this moment I am gathering information about which order to contact professionals to get the work done, some rough price estimates (I understand this is very much depending on the exact project and finishes) and also in to get a better understanding of how to get a full picture to complete the work ahead. Many thanks for your thoughts and answers and I would be happy to provide you with more details if needed. Frank

Hi Frank First of all you need to decide which one is most relevant to your living arrangements now as in if you have a big family or a growing one. Have drawing done so can have a visual and hopefully be passed by your local council.. Have in inspection of the depth of foundation to see if it can take the second 1st extension but going by experience i doubt it. If you was to go with the 2 at once be prepared to cough up roughly 80 thousand pounds. My advice to all my clients and potential one's is to only ever spend where is most important to you. Good luck
