uneven and cracked ceiling, replace with plywood or plasterboard?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.25 PM
Hello, The ceilings are uneven and cracked because of the sagging joists, thinking of replacing the ceilings since I plan to have the walls painted and carpet replaced. Would plywood more suitable for this job as the joists are sagging? Nearly all the rooms need some work I will have to budget and prioritize the work accordingly as I have limited budget. Thanks a lot.

Hi,
I would certainly recommend using plasterboard. It sounds like your ceiling would need to be re-framed to accomodate any sag you are describing, this can be achieved by lowering the framing to the lowest point of the sag and re-plasterboarding to achieve a straight, flat new ceiling. The whole job would take 2-3 days to complete, this includes plastering.

Definitely plasterboard, it is more flexible than plywood and a good plasterer will be able to finish it half decent.... If you ply it you can not plaster it and it will be an awful finish

Hi a would recommend to use plasterboard on this occasion but it may still. Not take the cracks out of it in the long run. You could also if you have enough space Is to lower your ceiling by a few inches to create a nice flat new ceiling it will cost a bit more for material and labour but will give you a nice clean look and finish to your ceiling.

if you would like to reduce the chance of big ugly cracks down the middle of your ceiling, when it comes to be plastered get the plasterer to joint tape(scrim) only the plasterboard joints not around the edge of the ceiling.
this most of the time encourages cracks to form around the wall/ceiling joint and not down the middle of your ceiling.
i use this method when requested and seems to work really well.
hope this helps.

I agree plaster board the ceiling and it will be a better job or you can drop the ceiling what will be better but over boarding the ceiling is still good

How can you overboard a ceiling what the customer has already said is uneven, it's either you take the whole ceiling down and either pack the joists out to a level or like t b joinery said if there's enough space built a new frame work level and board and skim
