Have I hired cowboys and how much to put right?

Hello, I am having work done on the roof, but someone has said something which is making me wonder whether or not it is being done right. Firstly, where it is being re-roofed, the breathable membrane is being tucked under the lead. It has been suggested that the lead should have been replaced because the cracks above it will be letting water in. The roofers said no water will get in there. What do you think? http://s1249.photobucket.com/user/azerazertest1/media/IMG_1278_zpski9jwpbq.jpg.html Secondly, the quote included repairs on the main roof. There is water getting in between tiles and wall where the mortar has weathered over the years. They said the have tried to point it, but it just keeps falling through the gap so they will get some expandable foam to fix it. Is this normal practice? From what I have read, the only proper fix is take of edge and ridge tiles, re-bed and re-point - how much would you charge to do this as I really don't think they will be doing it? http://s1249.photobucket.com/user/azerazertest1/media/IMG_1276_zpslxsqw8hn.jpg.html Thirdly, the new downpipe has been rested on a bottle gully like this one: http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-d510-circular-grid-bottle-gully/28956 Should the pipe have gone into it to prevent splashing on house wall? In fact, there is a stone between the downpipe and gully - if I take away stone, downpipe is loose and wobbly. How secure should pipe be? Responses much appreciated! Thanks Tina x UPDATE: I had a retired roofer and general builder look at the finished roof. There was a lot of cursing! I was advised to give them 75% of the money and tell them to **** ***. I have done this, but tried to go about it with a more level-headed approach. I am angry/frustrated that they took the job on if they didn't have the skills to do it. I am now in touch with a trusted roofer. The hip and ridge tiles all need taking off and re-doing. The repairs to the main roof didn't resolve the issues. I have been advised to have a dry ridge installed instead of the re-pointed wet ridge, which is still letting in water. There are other smaller issues as well. Thank you for all the replies and advice!

without actually looking at the job in question it is only speculation as to whether the job is done correctly or not it is normal to tuck the membrane under the lead cover with the roof tile tight against the wall then sealed with the lead on top of the tile, would not use expanding foam on the roof, the guttering does not sound right & the downpipes should be secure as for the cost of correcting any mistakes it impossible to say without looking at what may or may not need repaired. your best bet is post your job on the site and get a local expert round to check the job & note for any repairs required. good luck Alex

Having not looked at the job, it is difficult to say exactly but to prevent water getting in, any lead should cover your membrane and tiles 6inch across tiles and 6 inch up if you have a flat roof. The pointing should be a simple matter of filling with mortar, why you would use expanding foam on a roof is a mystery. Perhaps this is something we can't answer without seeing but expanding foam shouldn't be the answer. Your downpipe should be secured with brackets up the wall. For what it costs and little time it takes, it should be done correctly and not wobble or feel loose. Your standard bottle gulley will have holes which can be cut out for your downpipe to sit in and not let any waste and water fall where it shouldn't. Hope this helps, James

As everyone has said above . Pointing hip and ridge tiles is simple , remove and re-bed if necessary . Expanding foam is a no go ! You need expert advice and an on site evaluation . Wish you the best of luck .

I agree with the other roofer. People like that gives our trade a bad name. You should always ask for proof of they’re are skilled roofers. I have my card with proof with my N.C.Q in tiling slate Facia soffit and gardening. Including . Flat roofing torch on. There’s a lot of people like that out there. Hope you’re got it right now. Kevin
