When to worry about cracks
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.06 PM
Hi I own a two bed Victorian mid terrace. Over the year different cracks appear in the walls. Some are vertical (seemingly along plasterboard edges?) some are diagonal and some come out of window/door frame corners. Most are hairline and none more than 1-2mm thick. Is this just a case of plaster blowing or something I should be more concerned about! Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, there is always movement in old houses and can be caused by a number of things including changes in the season causing expansion and contraction of all materials involved. My guess the caulk around the windows and skirting has just shrunk over time. A crack that you can fit a £1 coin in on its side is worth checking out other than that it's just old beeimg old.

I wouldn't worry about it,from the info you have given those don't sound like structural cracks, any descent plasterer or painter/decorator should be able to fix those.
