Should I pay? My builder wants extra for floor fitting for selecting nicer planks in obvious areas.

Hello! We are doing a garage conversion to living space. We have agreed the cost at the beginning and it was not the cheapest. We used the builder team because our neighbor had the same garage conversion job done and recommended them. I thought it is easier to hire someone who has the experience with almost identical job. I wanted the hall way flooring to be changed at the same time, and for this area of less than 9 m2 he quoted for £300 extra for labour only. I agreed without negotiate as it was a small amount considering how much we pay in total. This makes the total re-flooring area ~34 m2 including the hall way. For this 34 m2 of flooring, the lead builder just arranged one guy working for him doing the flooring. He said it not enough work for more than 1 person and it will take 2 to 3 days to finish the flooring. In the end it took them 3 days to finish. I have requested they do a selection on the flooring to avoid knots being seen in obvious areas, and to avoid too much colour variation in obvious areas. This was agreed by the lead builder in advance. The guy doing the flooring of course spent some time to make this selection. Today the lead builder said to me he would charge extra for labour because due to my request his guy spent too much time selecting the flooring and the progress was delayed. However, to me this is quite unfair. As they have predicted 2 to 3 days and in the end it was 3 days. They have agreed to select the plants in advance. It was a one off quote and they've already charged £300 for 9 m2. Should I pay if they charge extra? Thank you! Vivienne

No you should not. Tell him to ram the extra charge where the Sun don't shine. If you were given a price before hand and you agreed etc and a time scale who cares what this builder thinks. Trying it on me thinks.

It's your decision, if you feel he is 'trying it on' stick to your guns and don't pay any extra. It's possible he underpriced the job and regrets taking it on now. If you feel maybe he has done extras on the extras then consider paying some extra - but it sounds like this is at your discretion. All the best, Bucks Carpentry Services

First thing is you shouldn’t start adding additional work after the price is agreed. However any carpenter would choose the best boards in visible areas and the worst boards to be placed in less visual areas and the grain and colour should be blended as best as possible. If the installers who done this job state they are carpenters then you should not pay, but if they state they are builders then you should pay.
