How easy is it for a layperson to strip a bedroom of wallpaper, make good and then repaint?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.45 PM
We have just discovered that our bedroom was previously wallpapered, and what the painter we hired did was paint over the paper rather than stripping the paper and repainting. Would it be relatively easy for a layperson to strip the wallpaper and repaint? What tools do we need?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can strip the wallpaper usually either by soaking the wall and waiting, but before that you may need to pierce the paper to allow the water to soak in there are special spikey wheel things you can buy, or you can use a steamer which is like a kettle with a hose, but beware that if the plaster is not sound underneath you may cause a bigger job and if junks of plaster fall out this can be tricky to fill.....if its a masonry/brick wall behind the plaster.
A plasterer would probably use bonding then multifinish to patch in large junks.
If its plasterboard also the boards may be damaged by removing the paper.....if its just backing paper remaining then its possible to skim fill this to give a good finish.
There may also be a lot of filling required after the paper is stripped, its probably best showing the room to a tradesman first before if you know any.

you will need a wallpaper steamer to make your job easy. like that wallpaper will be more easy to be removed and quicker. after all wallpaper is removed need to sand the wall with a sanding machine or with hand using sandpaper if dont have one. need to do repairs if they are any because most of the time under wallpaper are repairs to do. just after that you can start to lay the new wallpaper and can buy a wallpaper fitting tool kit because there you will have all the tools you need for the job. can find one on b&q cheap
